Inspired by telescope images of deep space, contemporary computer compression algorithms and early non-representational art, Fokkens creates images that exist beyond our imagination. Each work is created with the use of custom algorithms that extract qualities such as pattern, form and color. Fokkens then paints these abstracted qualities as isolated points upon the canvas. The result is a reductionist, analogue interpretation of an unimaginable digital reality.

Entitled "NGC-2070," this painting by Chicago artist Jan Pieter Fokkens depicts the large star cluster that lies at the center of the Tarantula Nebula. Located nearly 160,000 light years from earth, NGC 2070 includes a concentration of bright stars known as R136[14], the source of most of the energy illuminating the nebula.

Framed. Acrylic on canvas.
